Hello guys, welcome to my Blog! You all have heard about cloud computing. Cloud computing involves data processing, data management, and data storing activities using the internet. In today’s Blog, we will discuss a new technology: what is edge computing, and see how the next generation of connectivity will work.

Edge Computing Explained

Hello guys, welcome to my blog! You all have heard about cloud computing. Cloud computing involves data processing, data management, and data storing activities using the internet. In today’s blog, we will discuss a new technology: edge computing, and see how the next generation of connectivity will work.

What is Edge Computin?

Edge computing can be called an extension of cloud computing or an additional type. Usually, cloud servers perform all operations. The objective of edge computing is to perform operations closer to local devices or local places instead of on a centralized cloud server.

The Need for Edge Devices

In edge computing, an additional resource, like an edge device, is required. Normally, in cloud computing, there are two components: one device and one cloud server. In edge computing, there is an intermediate node, which is the edge device.

Example of Edge Computing

To understand edge computing, imagine you are in an area with a CCTV camera that records all physical activities. In the traditional approach, the camera records the data, sends it to the cloud server, and finally, the required part is stored in the cloud database. This approach puts a heavy load on the internet and uses more bandwidth.

A Smart Solution

A smarter solution involves using a motion detector sensor in the camera to detect and record physical activities locally. Only the necessary data is then sent to the cloud database. This reduces the communication gap and the load on cloud resources. The motion sensor works on the edge device, which is the source of data and is installed in various places.

The Role of IoT Devices

You can see IoT devices playing a significant role here. Predictions indicate that more IoT devices will be used, making traditional computing insufficient. Hence, the need for emerging technologies like edge computing arises.

Addressing Connectivity Issues

You might wonder why additional resources are needed when IoT devices are already intelligent. The most important aspect of IoT devices is connectivity. If an IoT device operates in a location without internet or network connectivity, communication issues can occur. This is where the edge device plays a crucial role, acting as an intermediary that helps maintain real-time communication.

Benefits of Edge Computing

As seen in the example, edge computing reduces bandwidth and latency, which are not free and incur costs. The most significant benefit is real-time communication with cloud servers, making your operations more efficient.

Conclusion

Edge computing represents a significant advancement in the way we process and manage data. By bringing computation closer to the data source, it reduces latency, saves bandwidth, and enhances real-time data processing capabilities. This is particularly crucial in scenarios where immediate data analysis is necessary, such as in the use of CCTV cameras with motion detectors.
